"My BIG News.............
A few days ago, I checked into the University of Southern California Keck Medical Center here in Los Angeles. It's time that I share something about myself that I have been reluctant to speak about….. I've battled a medical condition in relative silence for many years: Epilepsy (and the seizures that come along with it……) has been with me my entire adult life. As you can imagine, it has NOT been easy, knowing that at any second I could have a seizure. I have taken medication which has (for the most part) controlled my seizures, though the side effects have not been pleasant at times. I've never had a problem on tour and I have certainly not compromised how I have lived my life. But lately, the seizures have become more difficult to control and I am now in the hospital for some pretty serious tests to find out just whats going in my head. What are these tests working towards? Brain surgery.

Yes, brain surgery. As I write this, I am hooked up to a 24 hour EEG machine which is recording my brain waves. I have this awesome thing on my head with a million electrodes. This entire drama is being video recorded and monitored by nurses, technicians and doctors. They are weaning me off my medications, keeping me awake…… eventually inflicting some low level torture if needed I suspect….. all in an effort to induce seizures….. to find out exactly WHERE in my brain they are starting. The hunch is that my seizures start in my cerebral frontal cortex. I'll be here, hooked up with bundles of wires, cameras and meters, for 4-7 days. OH JOY!!! I'm so completely bored out of my head.

If this stage is a success, (if they can pinpoint the exact spot where my seizures start) the next test is a neuro psych test, an MRI and a WADA brain test. Half of my brain will be injected with a barbiturate to put it to sleep. Only using half my brain (I'm awake thru this of course….) they ask me to remember things, show me cards…… When the barbiturate wears off, I am given a multiple choice test which can show if one half of my brain can compensate for the other…..

Assuming my docs get all the information they need, they will cut the side of my head open and remove a thumb sized portion of my brain to stop my seizures once and for all. 60% of people that have this done never have another seizure. If all goes according to plan, I should be back on my feet in 2-3 months good as new. The miracles of modern medicine are boundless. I hope that these seizures WILL BE the last seizures that I ever have. This is not as experimental as it sounds. My doctor has hundreds of patients that have had this procedure. Who knew brain surgery was this popular!?!?

Its taken me years to finally acknowledge my condition publicly, even to my closest friends. As strange as it seems, embracing who I really am to everyone in my life, even my closest friends, has taken just as much or more courage than it has taken me to consider brain surgery. For decades, I have carried this around with me, worried what people would think. I feel like I am half way home already by simply embracing the reality of my situation. I have the limitless support of my wife thru this all. She is a warrior and a rock. My family is a source of great support as well, as are my friends. I could certainly never face this alone. I feel a great deal of support and love. I really need it!

So, why am I telling you all this here? I need a favor: Keep me in your thoughts and drop by here to say hi to me and wish me well thru the weeks ahead. (...and if you are in LA, stop by and bring me some real food or coffee!!!! Hospital food is DREADFUL!!) Everyone who I have already shared this news with has been so completely understanding and supportive…… it makes me wonder why I ever thought that this was something that I needed to bury in the first place! I didn't realize how much energy that it took to keep my little secret. Now that its out, I can't begin to tell you what a relief that it is! There is no reason to keep this a secret…… its who I am.

I don't really know what this journey is going to be like. There will be many tough days ahead I'm sure. I will need all the love and support that I can get!! Can you guys give me a hand?

I'll keep you all posted on my journey and hope that you can come right along with me. If and when I get to the surgical stage, I may be starting another Facebook page specific to this journey. Ask me questions about this, make me laugh, make me think, make me smile and help me get thru this, back on my feet, back to my home, back on a tour bus and back on stage!!"
