Cuando se oficializó la escisión de la banda finesa NIGHTWISH a finales del 2005, a muchos les sorprendió que la banda rompiera con su vocalista de siempre, TARJA TURUNEN en el momento más dulce de su carrera profesional. La herida se curaría con el tiempo y ambas partes aprendieron a funcionar independientemente, unos con una nueva vocalista, y la otra con una nueva banda para respaldarle sobre el escenario. Analizando la situación casi siete años después, la realidad es que NIGHTWISH –como marca más reconocible y generadores de la música que la gente reconoce y recuerda- han tenido más suerte que TARJA. Siguen llenando grandes recintos, sus discos venden de manera consistente y su futuro pinta más o menos brillante. TARJA, por su parte, tuvo que hacerse fuerte y explorar en solitario un mundo más o menos adverso para su propuesta como es el del heavy metal. Ha salido airosa, con un primer disco recomendable y un segundo trabajo que ha pasado más desapercibido pero que mantiene las formas y el interés de sus fans más dedicados. No obstante, ver a la diva TURUNEN en una sala para 700 personas cuando podría estar en las mayores arenas de Europa durante el próximo año siempre te da que pensar. Está claro que el éxito económico no siempre se traduce en felicidad interior (habría que hacer un test MMPI 2 a TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN y TARJA TURUNEN y cotejar resultados) pero lo cierto es que, al menos de cara a la galería, TARJA se quedó con la pajita más corta después de haberse creído irremplazable durante mucho tiempo, si hacemos caso a las historias que explica la biografía “Once Upon a NIGHTWISH” del periodista finés Mappe Olilla. Había un cierto sabor agridulce por estar viendo a TARJA bailar y hacer los cuernos sobre el escenario de una pequeña sala para 800 personas de Hospitalet de Llobregat. Algo parecía descolocado.
Musicalmente hablando, la propuesta de TARJA es atractiva y original. “WHAT LIES BENEATH”, su último disco, es más denso instrumentalmente que el anterior “MY WINTER STORM” y eso, extrapolado al directo, puede dar resultados mezclados. El concierto se inició con “Anteroom of Death”, un tema repleto de contraste, de acelerones y parones, que sirvió para marcar el ritmo a seguir en la actuación. Momentos duros y metaleros mezclados con baladas y temas más delicados, siempre interpretados con el portentoso estilo vocal de TARJA. Algunas como “Lost Northern Star” eran quizá demasiado complejas para sonar al inicio del show, pero este no es el show metalero típico donde la banda sale a matar en los cuatro primeros temas y luego ya se relaja un poco. TARJA hace las cosas a su estilo y si el público la acompaña, pues mucho mejor. Mejor recibida fue “Falling Awake”, con su toque de metal más moderno que ALEX SCHOLPP ejecuta a la perfección como guitarrista. No obstante, desde el principio del show quedó claro que la atención que no recibía TARJA la recibía el bueno de MIKE TERRANA. “The Beast” se crece en directo, como todos sabemos, y demostró a lo largo de más de una hora y media de show que por él no pasan los años. Han pasado casi quince años desde que nos sorprendió a todos junto a RAGE, con esos interminables solos durante los cuales un roadie le cambiaba los platos que iba rompiendo, pero el batería americano sigue siendo un valor seguro. No solo eso, sino que para una artista poco metalera como TARJA, TERRANA es signo de credibilidad, de verosimilitud. Para dejar claro que aquí se viene a trabajar, TERRANA ejecutó un mastodóntico solo de muchos minutos que dejó a todo el mundo en estado de perplejidad. Tras el brutal solo, la banda volvió a por “Little Lies”, otro de los mejores temas del último disco.
Aunque en Barcelona no interpretó su cover del “Still of the Night” de WHITESNAKE, si que presentó una nueva canción de tinte melancólico titulada “Into The Sun”, que convenció a la mayoría del público. Convenció más aún la eterna “Bless the Child” de su antigua banda, la única concesión “real” que hizo al catálogo de NIGHTWISH. No hace falta decir que las primeras filas enloquecieron haciendo en cinco minutos todo el headbanging que no habían hecho en otros momentos de la noche. TARJA, ya en su salsa y vestida con un precioso traje negro, hacía los cuernos y agitaba las melenas como pocas veces hizo en su anterior banda, demostrando que ha tenido que ponerse ligeramente las pilas y los resultados han sido fabulosos.
Casi en los bises, la banda realizó un set de piano y acústicas en la que tocaron un medley de “Rivers of Lust”, “Minor Heaven”, “Montañas de Silencio” y “Sing For Me”, con TARJA a las teclas. Esencialmente, el mismo tipo de set tranquilito que en la anterior visita Tarja realizó entre el público con toda su banda, mientras muchos asistentes se deshacían en lágrimas. Y es que si una capacidad sigue teniendo la vocalista es la de transmitir emotividad con su voz e interpretaciones. En el final de “Until My Last Breath”, hubo momentos de absoluta saturación de los sentidos escuchando el operático torrente de la finesa. Impresionante es un adjetivo que se queda corto ante la fuerza que desprenden sus cuerdas vocales. Justo antes de eso, interpretó un inesperado “Over The Hils and Far Away” de Gary Moore que puso a saltar a todo el recinto. Esta fue la otra “concesión” que hizo a la carrera de su antigua banda, que popularizó de nuevo el viejo tema del guitarra irlandés. En otras fechas, según parece, interpretó “Nemo” pero, a juzgar por la reacción popular, la elección realizada en Barcelona fue más que correcta.
Con un efusivo saludo y reverencia ante el público, la banda se retiró al camerino, no sin antes pararse Tarja a chocar manos con las primeras filas, agradecida por el apoyo, o conocedora de que quien acude a sus directos –aunque sea en cifras inferiores a los directos de NIGHTWISH– lo hace por convicción y dedicación. Un buen concierto del que esperábamos mucho menos.
