TARJA TURUNEN: "BREVE DESCANSO"

ENGLISH TRASLATE
Vocal Type: Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 1 note and a semitone (F3-Ab6)
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: TARJA TURUNEN's voice has a duality to it that has been created by her classical training and her time in a rock band. Thus, she can create a sound that is operatic, but equally adapt to sing in a more contemporary tone.

TARJA TURUNEN (2006)
The low note are achieved comfortably with great support, creating a controlled and measured tone that moves into its midrange with brilliant mirroring of timbre and tone. The head voice is the strongest part of TARJA TURUNEN's voice, thanks to its classical training. It's full, rounded and with a sweet timbre. It can create a resonant operatic tone, creating stunning crescendos, or utilise a softer timbre that contrasts texturally, but that's not so resonant. As the head voice climbs higher, towards the sixth octave, its colouring remains bright, polished and its tone stays clear and resonant, though less powerful than the lower half of the head voice- hear the introduction to "Damned and Divine"

TARJA TURUNEN´s brilliant technique allows for sweeping trills, resonant held notes and the implementation of a classical vibrato that is beautifully executed with even spacing.

Vocal Negatives:Over reliance on head notes, but that may be solely due to the type of music she sings. Still, it would be nice to hear how her belting range sounds in the fifth octave.

«No. Gracias a Dios. Yo me divierto mucho.

A mi manera.

Been three times in your career Independent Slovenia: What brought you back here?
«I´m very happy to be here again. Ljubljana is a beautiful city. Yesterday (Saturday) was a day of glorious sunshine. Fortunately we have a good day. We went to the TEC and gave a wonderful tour of the city. I love the city, very clean...»

Do you run? Often do you do during your trip?
«Yes, provided you have enough energy during concerts. If the road is long, rest, otherwise use every day to run free.»

We know that musicians have a busy schedule of tours and rarely have time for themselves. In most cases, are moving into a bus.
«The real life of a musician is very difficult. Very unbalanced.»

Do you have this rhythm?
«No. This is a tax payable by you (laughs). For me as a singer is very important to take care of myself. We know that when a singer gets sick he gets tired, the tour is at risk and increases the possibility that end. So far this has not happened yet. Thank God. Always pay attention to what I'm doing what I eat, how you seen ... And if we have a chance to relax, take it. I'm in good company. My kids are wonderful. I have so much fun. My fans are awesome, give me lots of love.»

You just mention your fans: how do you keep in touch with them? How does this relationship?
«For me it is very important to have good relationship with the fans. I have my own blog. From time to time to write a story of the visit or during the preparation for the album. They are informed much of what is happening to the lights of the media. At the same time, I think that social media are becoming increasingly important.»

I guess there was no way when you started. Have you made a greater emphasis on personal contact. Maybe you need?
«I still do these things. When I feel good and way too tired at concerts with fans. It is very important to have personal contact with them.»

Will miss the old days?
«You know, the business has changed radically in the last ten years. He was incredibly difficult it is today, to hear your voice and music. This is a battle in which all the musicians are struggling.»

If you miss the old days (laughs)?
«Yes. To my way. It is a challenge that the times we currently offer: you have to find your way and have to be brave enough to change.»

The organizers presented as the former lead singer of NIGHTWISH. Do you plan this? What kind of relationship with the former members?
«With the members of NIGHTWISH I have no contact. I do not mind if the organizers of the concerts presented me as the former member, as it is a fact. This will always be a part of my story. A large part of my story. That's where I started and saw music. Today, my music is radically different. My whole outlook on dealing with completely different things. But now I'm very happy.»

In recent years, we have developed as an independent artist. It's your last album, WHAT LIES BENEATH, TARJA personally is what you want to introduce?
«This is a process. This is a very interesting process. I have written many more songs for myself. It is always personal. Always open the box and personal sense, feel their emotions of yourself in your music that people can hear and feel. At first I was a little scary. In the last album was very excited about this and more peaceful. I was ready. Even for the next album I have a lot of material ready, and I'm willing to give it my best....»

How do you see today in your debut?
«I´m very proud of him, because I worked with small steps of it (laughs). He is good, because I had to start somewhere. Very honest, from innocent.»

We know you have a particular voice, which sometimes seems to be no musical background is necessary. Is it hard to write music for your voice?
«It is very difficult. Maybe it sounds crazy, but sometimes I write poems and is very difficult for my voice. I know the range of my voice, but sometimes I exceed my limits, is not always better (laughs). But somehow it's like a challenge. Always work a lot on it. Even today I work and I have to do it, that's all I have: my voice. This is an instrument that I have in myself.»

What direction are you now more inclined: opera or metal?
«I want to develop as an opera singer, because this allows me a more. This is a fact. When I started to sing metal, I did not know how to do this with my voice. In college I studied classical singing. So I had the constant presence of my singing teachers have been very supportive. I'm finding the way of singing opera music. But this is a big challenge. I want to continue on this road and at the same time I want to continue with the concerts of classical music is a big part of me and my love for music and "rock". So I'm in a perfect world.»
