TARJA TURUNEN: DIVIDIDA ENTRE DOS MUNDOS

Cuando TARJA TURUNEN canta, tiene una postura fuerte, casi de la realeza. Pero esta mujer, ahora de 34 años, tiene orígenes humildes y una base familiar sólida que dice ha sido esencial en su formación clásica. ¿Por qué hacer la primera versión grabada en vivo y también en DVD?

«A menudo hablaba con productores locales de los espectáculos de TARJA TURUNEN & HARUS, y no tenían la más mínima idea de lo que se trataba. La mitad se perdieron. Grabar el DVD, incluso antes del lanzamiento del CD era la manera de tratar de encontrar lo más pronto posible en este tour.»

Al leer tu biografía, parece que tus padres han contribuido mucho en tu carrera musical. Te alentaron aún cuando la escuela estaba a unos 20 kilómetros de casa y te apoyaron cuando decidiste estudiar en Alemania. Cuéntanos un poco de ese momento...

«Yo era una niña muy felíz y bendecida. Siempre aprecié lo que mis padres hicieron por mí. Fui a clases de piano, canto, teoría, flauta que estaba casi loca con tanto y todavía tiene algún estudio. Un día voy a ser madre y yo también les daré a mis hijos la oportunidad de elegir lo que me dieron mis padres. La música siempre me ha llevado a dónde debo ir. Mis padres no estaban allí para decir algo así cómo: "¿Estás segura de que es lo que quieres?", "¿No te parece mejor?. Cambié de escuela cuando era una adolescente, me trasladé a la ciudad, alquilé un dormitorio y era difícil, a veces sólo comía una manzana al día. Tuve la oportunidad y la agarré. En Finlandia la educación es gratuita incluso de música clásica y se que en América del Sur no es así, así que siempre estoy agradecida por las oportunidades que tuve cuando crecía.»

Ya que lo mencionás, ¿tus planes para tu primer hijo?

«Ah, si claro que quiero ser madre. Tengo conversaciones con mi esposo al respecto. Estamos muy contentos de que estamos juntos desde hace 11 años y vivimos muy bien, casi pegados las 24 horas, pero a veces tengo cosas por hacer. Vamos a tener este bebé, no sé cuando, pero cuando sea, será muy querido y será un gran desafío también.»

Esta semana en tu página web hablabas de Paulo Coelho, de quién dices, eres fan. Incluso hiciste música inspirada en un libro suyo, "Outlanders": ¿Cómo describes al escritor brasileño?

«Hace muchos años tuve la oportunidad de conocer la literatura de Paulo Coelho. Lo que escribe, su forma de escribir, tiene mucho que ver con mi estilo de vida. El "Alquimista" es mi libro favorito. De alguna manera se enteró y me preguntó si quería participar en un homenaje a él como "El Día de Paulo Coelho". Envié a él en forma de agradecimiento mis discos. Además de tener formación clásica y ser una cantante respetada, también eres vista como una diosa del metal por tu belleza y elegancia: ¿Qué haces para mantenerte en forma entre tanto trabajo? Y por casualidad ¿has recibido propuestas de revistas como "PlayBoy" para ser la portada de la revista?

«Oh si, ya recibí algunas propuestas y ¿sabes que a veces tengo replanteamientos de ellos?. Pero ya sabes, para ser honesta sería genial estar en la portada de "PlayBoy". Pero yo soy muy perfeccionista, y después de 30 años, hay cosas que ya no son lo mismo, las mujeres nos entendemos. Necesito mucho tiempo para mí, para hacer cualquier cosa determinada y creo que ahora no va a suceder. Me gusta mantenerme en forma. Fuera del show, que requiere una gran cantidad de energía en dos horas, sigo una rutina de ejercicios, correr, nadar, hacer gimnasia.       Las consecuencias del gran quiebre de NIGHTWISH, que sobresaltó la nación entera en octubre pasado, continúan en la historia de la anhelada cinta, revelada al mundo la semana pasada.

El libro señala con el dedo firmemente a Marcelo Cabuli, marido y manager personal del ex vocalista de la banda TARJA TURUNEN. Con cada vuelta de página, los cargos contra los el argentino Cabuli se hacen cada vez más pesados.

       El retrato de Marcelo Cabuli muestra una aprehensión al dinero, a menos como gerente poco honesto, arbitrario y manipulador, dedicado a la creación de la carrera de su esposa en solitario y quien abriera una brecha entre ella y los demás miembros de la banda.

       La contratación de NIGHTWISH y planes de gira se convirtió en un ejercicio doloroso, ya que no había "un hispano en las obras" en todo momento.

       En la experiencia finlandesa, la historia de NIGHTWISH es una de una de muchas, pero por el resultado final, nada nuevo ha salido a la luz.

       El libro describe de forma muy franca y brutal cómo el éxito financiero, la ambición artística, y la lucha de poder devoraron  las relaciones personales dentro de la banda.

    

Las acciones de Marcelo Cabuli puede haber sido la gota que derramó el vaso para NIGHTWISH, pero a los miembros de la banda, les harían bien verse en el espejo y sincerarse. Esto incluye al compositor y tecladista TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN, visto generalmente como el líder del grupo.

 Errrr... y qué esto es por lo que NIGHTWISH es conocido? Sin duda, es la fusión, en algo llamado "metal sinfónico" o "Metal Opera", de canto clásico y rock pesado?

 Podría posiblemente haber sido que, sin esos giros sorprendentes de los hechos, números acústicos, Holopainen se habría quedado en la mesa de dibujo o como canciones escritas alrededor de la fogata, y que el nombre del grupo no habrían viajado fuera de Finlandia o del este de la ciudad de Kitee.

La historia de NIGHTWISH ofrece un arco dramático espectacular, y Mape Ollila se agarra con ambas manos de eso.

Es claro que se acercó estrecha y personalmente a la gente que entrevistó para el libro, y esto se manifiesta en la sinceridad de las declaraciones que se pueden encontrar en cada página. No se deja piedra sin remover, si se trata de química personal, disputas contractuales, o simplemente del dicho pasado de moda "las estrellas de rock evitan caídas".

El retrato más detallado de todos los personajes que aparecen, es el de TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN. Una imagen multifacética de HOLOPAINEN escapista a la vista de todo el mundo, se presenta.

Al final, es probable que sea más interesante leer cómo estos jóvenes inocentes de la rural Kitee se convirtió en una historia de éxito en todo el mundo: la banda ha realizado giras en 40 países y han vendido casi tres millones de discos.

      The butler did it! 

      Well, no, since this is after all a rock band whodunit, it wasn't really the butler, it was the manager! 

      The fall-out from the great Nightwish rift, which shocked the entire nation last October, continues in the band's long-awaited history, released on the world last week. 

      

The book points the finger most firmly in the direction of Marcelo Cabuli, husband and personal manager of the band's former vocal soloist Tarja Turunen. With every turning page, the charges against the Argentine Cabuli get heavier and heavier. 

      The portrait of Marcelo Cabuli depicts a money-grasping, less than honest, arbitrary, and manipulative manager who was engaged on setting up his wife's solo career and who drove a wedge between her and the other members of the power metal band. 

      Nightwish's contractual dealings and touring plans became a painful exercise, as there was "a Hispanic in the works" at every turn. 

      

Against this background, it is somewhat awkward that the defendant himself does not get a hearing in the book, even though the other sources close to the band are given full rein to open their hearts and mouths. Not even Tarja Turunen gets to comment on her husband's doings. 

      It is probable that the decision is the couple's own, but this does not disguise the fact that it is the book's greatest drawback. The author Marko "Mape" Ollila has sought to be even-handed in his coverage, but in part for the reasons above, this band-history inevitably becomes a speech on behalf of the male members of the group and other figures in the background. 

      Nightwish would seem on the basis of this work to have been so divided into two distinct camps that both sides of the story cannot be fitted between the covers of one book. 

      The book itself does reveal that the sacked vocalist Tarja Turunen is planning her own biography. 

      

Not even a 380-page illustrated volume such as this is able, then, to offer the final word on the fuss that surrounded this incident last October, which swelled to quite astonishing dimensions in the media. 

      Once again, it is only a rock band. They do have a tendency to self-destruct and to drift into arguments over differences, musical or otherwise. 

      In the Finnish experience, the Nightwish story is one of a kind, but as far as the end-result goes, there is nothing very new here under the sun. 

      The book describes in quite frank and brutal terms how financial and chart success, artistic ambition, and a power struggle have eaten away at the personal relationships inside the band. 

      

The actions of Marcelo Cabuli may have been the straw that did for the Nightwish camel, but the members of the band, too, could do well to take a look in the mirror. And this includes the composer and keyboards player Tuomas Holopainen, generally seen as the leader of the group. 

      "Yeah, but I'm the guy who gave these people the opportunity for that rock glamour thing and to play music in a band and see the world and all that", Holopainen pours out liberally, adding his suspicions that none of any of this would have come to anything without him. 

      

If this is really the attitude, then it is hardly any wonder that the going gets tense and weird every now and then! 

      Especially as only a few pages earlier we have heard how Turunen - to everyone's surprise - brought her operatic singing style to the band's performances, and how the heavy rock backgrounds of guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and drummer Jukka Nevalainen made the music heavier than it was. 

      Errrr... and what is it that Nightwish is primarily known for? Surely it is the fusion, into something called "symphonic metal" or "opera metal", of classical singing and heavy rock? 

      Might it possibly have been that without these surprising turns of events, Holopainen's acoustic numbers would have remained on the drawing board or as songs strummed around the campfire, and that the band's name would not have travelled outside Finland or the eastern town of Kitee. 

      

The Nightwish story offers up  a spectacular dramatic arc, and Mape Ollila grabs it with both hands. 

      He has clearly been close and personal with the people he has interviewed for the book, and this shows up in the candidness of the statements that find their way onto the page. No stone is left unturned, whether it is about personal chemistry, contractual wrangling, or simple old-fashioned "rock stars getting trashed". 

      The chain of events that led to the sacking of Tarja Turunen runs throughout the book, but the work has other merits. 

      This is the first occasion when the nature of the international rock business has been examined in such comprehensive detail in a Finnish volume. The most detailed portrait of the characters involved is that of Tuomas Holopainen. A multifaceted image of Holopainen's escapist view of the world is presented. 

      

In the end, it is probably most interesting to read just how these innocent young people from rural Kitee became a worldwide success-story: the band have performed and toured in 40 countries and have shifted nearly three million CDs. 

      There are a number of surprising factors that pop up and influence the tale - not least the Finnish school system. It turns out that each and every one of the original members of the band was at some time the pupil of the enthusiasitic music teacher Plamen Dimov, who also incidentally provides violin back-up on the band's second album Oceanborn. 

      Furthermore, little Kitee seems to have taken a surprisingly sanguine and positive view of its rock ambassadors, right  from the very earliest days. 

      Which just goes to show that when you are out conquering the world, it does no harm at all to have things in good running order at home.
